Real Madrid delivered a sensational 3-0 victory over Manchester City, thanks to a brilliant hat-trick from Federico Valverde, leaving Pep Guardiola’s side with a mountain to climb ahead of the second leg at the Etihad Stadium.
The hosts were missing several key players, including Kylian Mbappé, Jude Bellingham, and Rodrygo, making them the underdogs in this Champions League clash. However, they rose to the occasion with a stunning first-half performance led by Valverde, whose clinical finishing was the highlight of the match.
The opening goal came in the 20th minute, as Thibaut Courtois launched a long ball over the head of City’s Nico O’Reilly. Valverde controlled the pass exquisitely, rounded City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, and slotted the ball home from an acute angle, giving Real Madrid the lead.
City had started the match brightly, but Valverde doubled Real Madrid’s advantage in the 27th minute, taking advantage of a clever flicked pass from Vinícius Júnior to break through the City defense and score again. Valverde capped off an incredible first-half performance with his third goal in the 42nd minute, bringing the ball down beautifully inside the box before flicking it past Marc Guéhi. Donnarumma attempted to block the shot, but Valverde’s strike was too powerful, sealing his first-ever hat-trick and giving the hosts a commanding 3-0 lead.
Despite a much-improved second-half performance from Manchester City, they struggled to break down a resilient Real Madrid defense. Donnarumma kept City’s hopes alive, pulling off a couple of key saves, including a penalty stop from Vinícius Júnior. But even with City’s best efforts, Real Madrid’s goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was in inspired form, making a crucial save to keep City at bay, ensuring the 3-0 scoreline stood.
Pep Guardiola: “Not much chance” for City
After the devastating defeat, Pep Guardiola admitted that Manchester City’s chances of making a comeback were slim, but he refused to give up hope entirely.
Guardiola stated, “It is a bad result, we cannot deny it. The first goal was not well defended, and after that, the quality they had with Valverde and the other players, it was a difficult result. But obviously, 3-0 is better than 4-0. We have six days. We will recover, go to West Ham, then with our people we will try.”
When asked about City’s chances in the second leg, Guardiola added, “Now, not much, but I’m not a guy to say we’re not going to try. Now it is most difficult (moment) to live but our mindset is we will look at what to do better, try to be more active in the final third and we will try.”
The road ahead is undoubtedly challenging for City, but with Guardiola at the helm, they will not give up the fight easily. Real Madrid, meanwhile, will head to Manchester with a commanding advantage, knowing that their clinical first-half performance has them in the driver’s seat for the second leg.
