Paris Saint-Germain produced a devastating late surge to defeat Chelsea 5–2 in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League last-16 clash, leaving the English side with a huge task ahead in the return fixture at Stamford Bridge.
Despite the heavy scoreline, Chelsea showed resilience for large parts of the match and twice fought back to level the game. However, costly defensive mistakes and a brilliant late performance from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia ultimately proved too much for the Blues.
PSG opened the scoring through Bradley Barcola, who silenced recent criticism by smashing the ball into the net off the underside of the crossbar. Chelsea responded with determination and managed to bring the match back on level terms, refusing to allow the home side to dominate early.
The hosts regained their advantage just before halftime in spectacular fashion. Only seconds after Cole Palmer had a header saved, PSG launched a lightning-fast counterattack. Ousmane Dembele danced past Wesley Fofana at the edge of the box before firing beyond Filip Jorgensen to restore PSG’s lead.
Chelsea once again responded early in the second half. Pedro Neto burst down the left flank and delivered a precise pass to Enzo Fernandez, who calmly finished to make it 2–2 and give the visitors renewed hope.
That hope quickly faded after a costly mistake from goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen. Attempting to play out from the back, his pass was intercepted by Bradley Barcola, who fed Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. The Georgian winger then set up Vitinha, who delicately chipped the stranded goalkeeper to put PSG back in front.
At 3–2 the tie was still finely balanced, but Kvaratskhelia soon took control of the contest. The winger produced a sensational long-range strike to extend PSG’s lead before adding a fifth goal from close range in the final moments, sealing a commanding advantage for the French champions.
Tempers briefly flared late in the game following a touchline altercation involving Pedro Neto and a ball boy, which sparked a short melee between players from both sides. No red cards were issued after review.
Chelsea now face a daunting challenge in the second leg, needing a remarkable comeback in London to keep their Champions League hopes alive. Meanwhile, PSG head to Stamford Bridge full of confidence after delivering one of their most clinical attacking displays of the season.
